Brooklyn Law School Hosts First of its Kind “Dorking” Event Exploring the Dangers and Legality of Search Engine Hacking

Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Law School’s Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy Clinic (BLIP) and Legal Hackers are pleased to announce the upcoming event “Go Dork Yourself – the Dangers of Search Engine Hacking” on April 19th, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Subotnick Center on the eleventh floor of 250 Joralemon St, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

The event was inspired by third-year Brooklyn Law School student Star Kashman, who recently published an article in University of Washington’s Journal of Law, Technology & Arts titled “Google Dorking or Legal Hacking: From the CIA Compromise to Your Cameras at Home, We Are Not as Safe as We Think.”

As Kashman stresses, “the legality of search engine hacking commonly known as ‘Google Dorking’ has become a subject of increasing importance because current cybersecurity legislation does not explicitly address it. Although this advanced search technique can be used in legitimate ways, malicious hackers have also used it for criminal acts, such as cyberterrorism, industrial espionage, identity theft, and cyberstalking.”

The “Go Dork Yourself” event is a first-of-its-kind opportunity to bring together experts in hacking, cybersecurity, and law to discuss the implications of search engine hacking and how the legal and technology fields can work together to find solutions to protect sensitive data online. Star Kashman will be speaking alongside victims’ rights attorney Carrie Goldberg, Founder/Director of BLIP Professor Jonathan Askin, cybersecurity law expert Professor Mark Rosen, and Owlsec Founders and Ethical Hackers Jimi Flynn and Kevin Roberts.

As Kashman notes, “it is essential that our audience understands how search engine hacking can be used legally and illegally. This event will be a valuable learning and networking opportunity for anyone interested in cybersecurity and the law.”

The event is open to the public and happening both in-person and online. Anyone who is interested in attending – and perhaps even becoming a “Master of the Dork Arts” – should register on the event website through this link.
